Pimple dos and don’ts

In the teen years when hormones are particularly active, it’s normal to get an over abundance of sebum, the oil that is produced by the sebaceous glands to keep your hair and skin lubricated. It can happen in adulthood, too, particularly when you are stressed. You may not be able to prevent pimples altogether, but there are certainly few things you can do – and a few things you should skip! – to help keep your skin as clear as possible.

DO > Take care of your skin

Washing your face twice a day helps to keep your pores free of the dirt and bacteria that can cause pimples. Rather than soap (which can dry out your skin) look for a purpose-made product, like Clearasil Daily Clear Skin Perfecting Wash.

DO > Read the labels

Ingredients proven to be effective pimple fighters include Benzoyl Peroxide, Azelaic Acid and Sulphur, so look for products that feature those. You might notice that some products contain Salicylic Acid. That’s in there to help exfoliate your skin and reduce redness.

DO > Use facial products on body breakouts

Pimples on your back, chest and neck don’t get much attention, but they are quite common, and sometimes more challenging to look after than the pimples on your face. This is because the skin on your body is thicker and has larger pores than facial skin, making it easier for pores to become clogged. The products you use on your face will be suitable for other parts of your body. Use Clearasil Daily Clear Clear 'n Refine Daily Scrub to lift away dead skin cells.

DO> See your doctor if symptoms persist

An ongoing problem with pimples is one of the most common reasons teenagers visit their doctor.. The doctor can advise and recommend suitable products to help clear pimples, such as a topical agent that helps to clear out blockages.

DON’T > Stress

Stress releases hormones that can make oil glands release more oil onto your skin, clogging pores and causing pimples. If you can find a way to manage your stress, chances are your skin will improve.

DON’T > Eat junk food

Researchers recently suggested replacing high glycemic index (high-GI) foods with low-GI foods to help reduce pimple problems. High-GI carbohydrates found in potato chips, white bread and even alcohol are digested quickly, which boosts the insulin levels in your blood. This increases a molecule that blocks sebaceous glands, and it raises the amount of hormones called androgens, which stimulates the production of sebum. So stick to wholegrain breads and cereals, green leafy vegetables and high-fibre fruits.

DON’T > Pick and squeeze

Squeezing a pimple not only aggravates the pore, it can spread oil and bacteria to surrounding areas and may lead to pimple marks. Try using a quick-action cream such as Clearasil Ultra Rapid Action Pimple Cream which can help reduce the size and redness of your pimple in as little as four hours.

DON’T > Go to bed with your makeup on

Not removing your makeup before bed can clog your pores. Choose a quality cleanser like Clearasil  Daily Clear Oil Free Daily Gel Wash and leave it in the shower so cleansing becomes part of your daily routine. If you do wear makeup, choose water-based, oil-free and non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores) products, and always apply to a washed face, with clean fingertips or a clean cosmetic sponge.
