Handshakes v fist bumps

Touch is one of the most common ways to spread germs. When you sneeze or cough, the germ droplets are transferred to your hands, and the ones you don’t catch can fall onto the surfaces around you or get airborne.

Healthy hygiene practices, such as regular hand washing and keeping high-traffic surfaces clean, are some of the most effective ways of help keeping you healthy. But there may be something else you can do…

Bump it up
Researchers at West Virginia University in the US have found that when it comes to greeting people, the fist bump may be a more hygienic solution to the handshake.

They reasoned that the comparatively large surface area of the hand versus the fist meant that the fist could carry fewer germs.

The quick pump of the fist bump also worked in its favour, compared to the relatively long pause of the handshake. The briefer the contact, the less chance for germs to latch on.

Before you get too excited, it’s worth noting that the sample size of the study was limited to two people in a hospital setting. It’s not exactly exhaustive research, but the basic premise has a healthy dose of common sense.

If you’re keen to limit your exposure to bugs, you could do worse than favour the friendly fist bump! But if you’re looking for the number one way to keep your hands hygienic , keep washing your hands.
