Baby room blast

In those early months of life, babies spend many hours sleeping and playing in their bedrooms. Getting into some good cleaning habits will help keep your baby’s room healthy.

  • Bedding  Sweat, nappy accidents and milk spits can make the place where you baby sleeps prone to germs. Change the sheets weekly or whenever a mess is made. Vinyl-covered mattresses can be wiped down with warm soapy water and left to dry in the sun. For a cloth-covered mattress, spot clean stains with a damp cloth then leave to dry in the sun. Cloth-covered mattresses should also be vacuumed regularly to pick up dust and dust mites debris.
  • Cots If you have the mattress out for cleaning, take the opportunity to wipe down the surfaces of the cot with antibacterial wipes, such as Dettol Antibacterial Surface Cleanser Wipes, or a soapy cloth. The handrails of the cot should also be wiped down daily, especially for babies who have started to pull themselves into a standing position and may spend some time standing at the side of the cot
  • Change tables The table or mat where you change your baby’s nappy is obviously a hot spot for bacteria. First of all, it’s important to remember that you need to clean your hands after a nappy change. An antibacterial hand wash, like Dettol Moisture Antibacterial Hand Wash, will help ensure your hands are clean and hygienic. Clean the change mat daily by wiping it down with antibacterial wipes or a cloth and warm, soapy water. Once a week you can give the whole table a wipe over, too.
  • Floors Babies spend hours on the floor every week. Limit their exposure to dirt and grime by cleaning floors weekly. For hard floors, sweep first, then mop with soapy water or use a cleaner with an antibacterial agent. For carpets, vacuum weekly and spot-clean stains as they happen. It’s a good idea to get carpets steam cleaned a few times a year to help keep them clean and healthy (ideally every three months).
