No parent wants to make their teen overly image conscious, but a fresh focus on skincare now will help your teen keep on top of the inevitable skin issues of adolescence. The routine laid out here is easy to follow, and will help establish healthy skin habits to last a lifetime.
Step 1 When you wake, wash your face
Sweat and natural oils build up on your skin overnight and it’s important to wash those away in the morning. If you’re showering, remember to wash your face, but not with the same soap that you’re using on the rest of your body. Instead, try using a gentle cleanser like Clearasil Daily Clear Oil Free Daily Gel Wash. If you’re in a hurry and have to skip the shower, do take a couple of minutes to clean your face before you rush out the door.
Step 2 Apply sunscreen
A daily sunscreen is a must for young Australians. Choose a
broad-spectrum product (that means it protects you from both UVA and UVB) with a skin protection factor of SPF 30+ or more. Don’t overload your skin with product, but be aware that most people don’t apply enough sunscreen for the product to adequately protect their skin. The Cancer Council advises that half a teaspoon of sunscreen will do for the face, ears and neck, then a teaspoon for each limb, the front of the torso and the back of the torso.
Step 3 Pack some face wipes
Over-washing your face can strip skin of its natural oils. When that happens, the skin tries to compensate for the dryness by producing more oil – the very thing you were trying to avoid in the first place! You only need to wash your face once in the morning and once in the evening, and following any particularly hot and sweaty activity like sport. If you have oily skin and you feel that your face gets greasy and shiny through the day, take some face wipes with you to school and give your face a quick wipe-over every now and again. Clearasil Daily Clear Vitamins & Extract Cleansing Wipes are particularly gentle.
Step 4 Cleanse skin in the evening
After a day on the go, sweat, oil and dirt will have built up on the surface of your skin. Invest in a facial cleanser, which will be gentler on your skin than soap. Ideally, look for a product that contains an exfoliant to help remove dead skin cells. Salicylic acid is an ingredient that exfoliates and helps reduce redness around existing pimples. It’s found in a range of products, including Clearasil Daily Clear Clear ‘n’ Refine Scrub.
Step 5 Follow with a moisturiser
You should apply some moisturiser every night, no matter how old you are or what skin type you have. Be careful about which product you choose, though. Teens should look for a lightweight moisturiser which is less likely to clog pores. And make sure it is a product formulated specifically for the face – a hand or body product will not do!
